Scenery change

Although routine may seem like a distant planet to caregivers at home with a newborn, it is possible. Routines can give us a sense of calmness. They can also help you to feel as you if you have accomplished something throughout the day. Common routines that seem to just flow into place during those newborn days are diaper changes, feeding time, bathing time, meal time for caregivers, bottle washing. Even though these daily tasks can feel rewarding, and a check mark on the to-do list, they can be monotonous and tedious. I like to recommend to those that are at home with newborns and infants to try and incorporate some scenery changes into the day.

Escaping to a beach is not the type of scenery change I'm referring to - although that sounds perfect. I'm more so talking about going to different places of your home with baby. Instead of feeding in the bed, try doing a feed in the living room or the baby's room. After diaper change spend some time sitting near a window or door and letting baby soak in some natural vitamin D. Create some rich vocabulary while talking to baby in front of the mirror. Bring baby out to the kitchen while doing dishes and talk about what you are doing. My favorite is walking around outside in the yard. Walk around while baby is able to stare up at the trees. Spending some time in a new environment, even if it is only a few minutes, will break up the day and create more moments of dialogue with baby. Remember, keep it simple. These little newborns do not need much to be impressed, and the scenery change can energize the caregiver.
